Collectors follow lines the way watch people follow calibres. This sheet traces how the great flagships evolved, lists the makers who build to order, and opens a desk for buying and selling rare pieces privately.

Sennheiser open reference

Sennheiser's open-back reference line starts with the 1968 HD 414 and runs through the 300-ohm HD 580, HD 600 and HD 650 (1993 to 2003) to the 56 mm HD 800 (2009) and HD 800 S (announced December 2015). A separate electrostatic branch begins with the limited-edition Orpheus HE 90 of 1991 and continues with the HE 1, announced in 2015.

Sony flagship line

Sony's flagship headphones run from the limited-edition MDR-R10 of 1989 through the Qualia 010 (2004) and the MDR-Z7 (2014) to the MDR-Z1R (2016), all dynamic designs. Sound & Vision's review of the Z1R traces this same sequence, and Sony's 2004 Qualia release compares the Q010's weight with the R10's.

Stax electrostatic Earspeakers

Stax has built electrostatic headphones, which it calls Earspeakers, since the SR-1 went on sale in 1960. The Lambda design of 1979 gave way to the Omega series (SR-Omega 1993, SR-007 1998), and the multi-layer MLER electrodes introduced with the SR-009 (2011) carried into the SR-009S (2018) and the SR-X9000 (2021).

Circles are dynamic drivers, squares planar magnetic, diamonds electrostatic. Amber marks the current end of each line. Years are the maker’s first official announcement. Lines show succession within each maker’s flagship range, which is not always direct engineering descent. Launch prices are in the currency they were announced in.

Bespoke makers

Hand-terminated cables in chosen conductors, and the workshops that build cups and one-off pieces to order.
